Control Deck

Space Station Il Cercatore

As soon as Emma stepped back on the station after the two-stage journey from New York, she convened an urgent meeting in the Control Deck.

“He’s in our heads,” she stated very plainly, seeing no sense in denying it. “And that’s exactly where he wants to be. Godfrey and I have talked about how Mason could know we were onto him about the toxin and how he could know about Tara, and neither of those are really concerning us.”

“No?” Timo asked.

Emma shook her head. “A lot of people know about Tara. Everyone on the station, really, and you know some of them are talking to their families all the time. There’s no reason to think there was anything malicious in that getting out, it’s just the usual thing of everyone always thinking they can trust one person. Which they can, until the chain gets too long. And as for the toxin… you’re starting to show it, Timo. Your walk, your eyes… it’s subtle, but it’s starting.”

Timo met Dan’s eyes, but not without a great deal of sadness.

“He knows it’ll have been detected by now,” Dan went on. “He knows you’ll have retraced your steps, he knows he’s an obvious suspect, and he knows the ICA has cameras everywhere. The way he’s done this is just a giant middle finger to all of us, and I think if we ever made the footage public he would double-down and say it was doctored. He’d say we were setting him up. And Chip, as excellent and as totally convincing as all the evidence you’ve brought together is, every piece of it requires a tiny jump or assumption. The links are all clear as day, but if you were defending him I think you would win. Nothing literally ties him to anything.”

Ruefully, Chip nodded. “I thought that when I got back from Russia,” he sighed. “Obviously this is enough for us to know what he’s done, but there’s a difference between evidence and proof. The ice cube video is as close as we get, but even then I would ask a prosecutor to prove it was laced and they wouldn’t be able to.”

“But Emma is right,” Godfrey chimed in. “The bastard is in our heads and that’s what counts. He has us doubting everything except each other, and he has us guessing what else he might know and what he might be about to do next. He’s even got me thinking about what he might be thinking about what we’ll do next. And with how reckless and aggressive he was on the show, Emma and I have come to the conclusion that we need to expedite on all fronts. How are we doing on the water tower? Do we know where the source of the UpLift connection was?”

“We just finished collating what we found with what the kids found,” Chip said. Timo, standing next to him, was as unusually quiet as Alessandro. “They have three towers, and we have very plausible links to buildings near two of them.
